The Girls return in September with “Invisibles”

Seattle quintet The Girls will return with a new full length CD / LP on Dirtnap Records this September. Titled Invisibles, the band’s sophomore full length was recorded by Martin Feveyear at Seattle’s Jupiter studios. Earlier the band described the sound of the record as “forging more toward a Wire/Devo twitchy-ness.”

The band now consists of original singer Shannon Brown and guitarist Zache Davis along with bassist Griff (Tourist), keyboardist Derek Mason (the Catheters), and drummer Elie Goral (Raz Rez).

Former punk turned Canadian legislator fights for Net Neutrality

Charlie Angus, formerly of Canadian punk act L’Etranger and alt-country outfit Grevious Angels has become an MP representing Timmins-James Bay for the left-wing New Democratic Party in Canada. In that capacity he is leading the charge for Net Neutrality in Canada. (For those unfamiliar with the issue, please check out this “news” report.)

Angus wants Parliament to debate the topic, and his brief bill amends Canada’s Telecommunications Act to prohibit various forms of discrimination. His major issue is with the notion of internet users being referred to incessantly as “consumers” and talks instead of them as “citizens” and believes the Internet as a hugely empowering medium for democracy. Unlike the United States, Canadian ISPs like Bell Canada have already begin throttling competing services when they introduced their own video store.

You can check out some details and clips of a recent rally here.
