The Hold Steady detail ‘Stay Positive’

The Hold Steady The Hold Steady recently spoke with Billboard about their forthcoming album and second for Vagrant Records. The record is titled Stay Positive and is due out July 15, 2008

The critically acclaimed band had this to say about the new album:

There’s less party talk, don’t think anything is a radical departure, but there are things that I wanted to talk about. I was influenced a lot [by] getting old, and attempting to age gracefully. The idea is to not wake up washed up. You want to keep progressing, intellectually.

I think four records in, you’re thinking what have we done before?” What should we do here? You have these initial habits, but you’re fighting those — and that’s healthy, to make things sound different. I think we’ve tackled the big huge rock riff and I think we wanted to extend what we’re used to doing. Step out of our safety zone.

New Weezer single designed to annoy their label

The oddly specific lyrics of the new Weezer single are a direct response to interference from the band’s longtime label, Geffen. According to a new Rolling Stone interview, Geffen complained about the album’s first demos and demanded that Rivers compose “catchier” songs.

Rivers noted that his meeting with record execs didn’t go well. “I came out of it pretty angry” he said, and worte the song specifically to criticize their requests, like this not-so-subtle bit of sarcasm:

Everyone likes to dance to a happy song/With a catchy chorus and beat so they can sing along/Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the chart/ Maybe if I work with him I can perfect the art.

The entire interview appears in the “Spring Album Preview” issue of Rolling Stone, The song itself can be found on their myspace page.

Pete Wentz sued by heckler in 2007 altercation

The peculiar story from June 2007 that had Fall Out Boy‘s Pete Went (and his security team) beat down a heckler at Schuba’s Tavern in Chicago has turned into a lawsuit. According to a report from TMZ:

Andy Kallas claims he was watching the boys perform at Schuba’s Tavern in Chicago, when Wentz and his peeps beat him to a pulp for several minutes. Kallas claims he suffered “serious injuries to his head, mouth and face.” The way the lawsuit reads, the attack was totally unprovoked. But here’s the deal. We’re told Kallas was loud, obnoxious and heckling the band before the incident. Kallas is suing both Wentz and the club for an unspecified amount in damages.

Last year, Wentz denied that the incident was malicious, claiming self-defence:

The truth is on the way out the door I had to pass directly next to the guy and I knew it, so I kept my head down and walked out. As I did, the guy reached out and grabbed me and said something I couldn’t really hear – it was a glorious use of the English language, though,” he continued. “As he grabbed me, I punched him. Yell all you want at me, say whatever, but in a situation like that I will defend myself. After that, of course, it got chaotic, [but] we have several independent witnesses that gave statements saying he grabbed me first … I am not worried over the outcome, as I was clearly in the right. Anything anyone else is saying or writing is simply not true

You can find the lawsuit filing here.
