Nakatomi Plaza (1998-2008)

Brooklyn’s Nakatomi Plaza have announced plans to break up after their appearance at The Fest this year:

[Our band] has entered the process of disbanding. I say “process” because that’s exactly what it is. It’s nearly impossible to end something overnight that you’ve been involved with for a decade, but it is in-fact ending, and very soon. I wanted to tell everyone (particularly our friends that do not live in the Northeast and that may be attending the Fest 7 in Gainesville, FL this weekend) to encourage you to come see the band this Sunday at 7:30pm at Durty Nelly’s for one of our final performances.

We hope to enter the studio by the end of this year and finally record these songs we’ve been working on for the last year and a half. We are too proud of them to let them go undocumented. And hopefully not too long afterwards, we will play an undetermined amount of farewell / record release shows centered around the Northeast. These will surely be very special events and we hope you can attend.

Statements from each band member can be found here.

Ben Nichols of Lucero announces release plans for solo debut

Ben Nichols of Lucero has announced plans to release his new solo debut. The record is titled The Last Pale Light in the West and is due out January 20, 2009. Nichols entered the studio this past August with Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero) and Todd Beane (Glossary) to record this seven track mini-LP which features songs inspired from the Cormac McCarthy book Blood Meridian. Nichols self-released a download-version of the album earlier this month.

In related news, Lucero has signed to industry giant, Universal Records, and the band will be heading into the studio to record music for their sixth studio LP at the end of 2008, which is scheduled for release in summer 2009. Nichols also did a song for All Aboard: A Tribute to Johnny Cash where he contributed his take on “Delia’s Gone” to the compilation CD (out now on Anchorless Records). All profits from sales go to the Syrentha Savio Endowment (SSE), a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to underprivileged women who cannot afford the expense of fighting breast cancer. That album is streaming here.
