National Geographic launches record label

Wired reports that National Geographic is launching a new record label. Dubbed “Nat Geo,” the plan is for the label to release music on CD and digitally.

The report goes on to explain that “the new label will focus not on the sound of the rain forest, indigenous tribes, or things of that nature. Rather, Nat Geo Music is looking for modern-sounding bands from various countries that have the potential to attract listeners from other regions.

As for the surprise about launching a label at this somewhat perilous time?

There’s a lot of doom and gloom about the business as a whole, but that’s the business as a whole. But we don’t have two million dollars-worth of product sitting at Best Buy that we’re really worried about being returned [by the stores] right now.

Every label and artist needs to find a business model that works for them, If you can find a business model that works for you, then who cares what the rest of the business is doing?

We Are The Union to record with Matt Allison, talk release plans

We Are the Union wll be headed into the studio with producer Matt Allison (Less Than Jake, The Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio) at Atlas Studios in March to record their next full length. They had this to say:

All obvious sarcasm aside, we are super stoked to be able to do our album at Atlas, and as such we regret to announce that officially, the Europe tour is POSTPONED. To a later date of our choosing. We hope that a new record will slightly make up for this.

On the subject of that record, we have some exciting label news that we can’t share with you just yet. What we CAN say is that we’ve been hard at work on new material – both during rehearsals over the past few months, as well as more intensively in the past few weeks as we prepare stuff to go into the studio.

They released Who We Are in 2007. That album is going to be released in Japan on February 28, 2009 via Inyaface.
