Chuck Ragan has posted an update on some plans for 2009:

I’m packing up right now to head over the pond to meet up with Digger Barnes and Jon Gaunt in Hamburg, Germany. We’ll be playing together on a short run over there before returning to the states to finish a new full length record for Side One Dummy. On the Euro tour we’ll be playing a wide range of material from Los Feliz, Feast Or Famine, Bristle Ridge, Revival Road as well as some new songs that will be on the next record. We’ll all also do our best to keep you posted and up to date with the new Side One Dummy record.

Australian man plans to open the first skate-park of Afghanistan

The New York Times has an article about a 34 year old man from Melbourne, Australia who plans to open the first skate-park to ever exist in war-torn Afghanistan.

Oliver Percovich is hoping to use the skateboarding school as a way to help encourage students into after-school activities like English and computer classes, which are otherwise reserved for the elite. The news paper describes the park as “a decrepit Soviet-style concrete fountain with deep fissures. The tangle of novice skaters resembles bumper cars more than X Games.

Sadly, girls can only participate in skateboarding for a few short years. When Afghan girls reach puberty, they must be veiled and can no longer associate with men outside the family. Percovich said his indoor skate park could be part of the solution, with boys and girls in separate classes.

You can find the article, some photos and video here.

Harlots go on indefinite hiatus

Harlots Harlots have announced that they’re now on an indefinite hiatus.

According to the band:

As it stands right now, Harlots played our last show at Robot Mosh Fest 2008 in West Bend, WI alongside our good friends in Veil of Maya, After The Burial, With Dead Hands Rising, Paria, HeWhoCorrupts, etc. At this point almost all of us are living in different states, and we just can’t afford to be a band. We’ve been doing this since 2002 and we all have given up so much to be in this band.

mewithoutYou complete album

mewithoutYou have posted an update on their next full length.

We are very close to sending the new album out to be mastered. I realize that it’s been taking us some time to get this done, but all of our careful pain staking attention will be worth it. We are all very pleased with how things are shaping up. I hope that we will do a tour this summer. There still has to be some talk between the band members but we will see what is in store for our year.

The record will be the follow-up to Brother, Sister which was released in 2006.
