Frank Turner: Part 1

Frank Turner There are two important things to note about Frank Turner. One, he’s really good. Two, he really likes to talk. Luckily for myself (Frank Corva), and you – the reader, the stuff he likes to talk about is really awesome. In this, Part 1, of our interview, we discussed his love for the US punk scene, why writing songs that everyone likes is cool and what it means to grow out of your angst ridden teen years and to shed the cloak of anger come your mid-twenties. We also touched upon his Middle Eastern roots as well as the commonalities of punk rock and Catholicism. Read on and enjoy, the man has a plethora of genuine insight.

Turner’s debut Love, Ire and Song is being re-released in North America by Epitaph Records. Meanwhile, its followup, Poetry of the Deed is due on the same label in September.

Dischord updates: Gray Matter reissues, Joe Lally plans UK tour, Jawbox reissues

Dischord Records has posted a lengthy update about some of their future releases. Notable among these updates is news of the label reissuing the two records from Gray Matter, Food For Thought / Take It Back, on vinyl in September. Both albums will also come with MP3 download coupons, and the Take It Back reissue will be expanded into a full-length with the addition of four songs from a double 7″ the band released in 1991.

The label also adds that Joe Lally is planning to tour Japan in October and the UK and Ireland in November. In the meantime, he’ll be spending time closer to his home in Italy to write, presumably for a follow-up to his 2007 full-length Nothing Is Underrated.

Lastly, the label has announced that they’re partnering with Desoto Records to reissue the seminal 1994 Jawbox album, For Your Own Special Sweetheart. The CD will feature three extra songs and the vinyl will be packaged with an MP3 download coupon, which will also include the extra tracks.

Bluebrain signs to Lujo Records

Lujo Records has announced the signing of Washington, DC duo Bluebrain, and will be releasing the band’s debut full-length, Soft Power. The band features former members of Brooklyn, NY indie rock act The Epochs and the label notes:

“Bluebrain’s sound is a slight departure from The Epochs’ electronic-tinged rock. On Soft Power we see Hays and Ryan venture further into experimental realms, pushing the limits of pop music by way of manipulation and reimagination. The album is sprawling–intent on not staying in one place musically for very long … Lyrical content varies from the fantastical to the macabre. Songs about obsessive behaviors, lucid dreaming, and yes–even organ harvesting– go hand in hand with the unique sonics found on the record.”

A release date for Soft Power has yet to be announced, but the label has already posted a track from it for free download. You can grab “Ten by Ten” here.
