Planned Downtime on Thursday, August 6th

Beginning at 6:00 pm Pacific time Thursday August 6th, we will be performing software maintenance on some Steam servers. We expect the resulting downtime to last three hours at most, putting the end of the window at 9:00 pm Pacific time.

Some Steam services will be offline during this time. Affected services will include the Steam Community, in-game matchmaking or lobbies, downloading games from Steam content servers, and making purchases from the Steam store. Games that do not rely on Steam matchmaking services should remain playable.

News updates and any further information will be posted in this space.

We will work to make this downtime as short as possible. Thank you for your patience!

Win an Achilles test pressing

Achilles Today, we’ve got a cool contest for all of you vinyl nerds out there. Farewell Party Records is giving the wax treatment to Hospice, the sophomore full-length from Rochester, NY’s Achilles which was originally released on CD via Hex Records in 2007. Hospice was lauded by our very own Brian Shultz, who remarked in his review that “Hospice is assuredly a step up from the also excellent The Dark Horse, which combined some of the best aspects from heavy but ambitious acts like Botch and Breather Resist. Achilles seem to forge their own territory here, diversifying their sound and concentrating less on atmospherics and more on a heavy base, mixed up tempos and interchanging riffs.” The band features members of Soul Control and Polar Bear Club.

Two lucky winners will receive a test pressing of Hospice, used only for the record release show and limited to 60 copies. Good luck! Those of you who don’t win may want to pre-order the record from Farewell Party or Vinyl Collective.

Circa Survive signs to Atlantic

Circa Survive has signed to Atlantic Records. The band posted an update explaining the change from longtime home, Equal Vision Records:

After almost a year of writing, we have begun working on our third record in Toronto, ON. David Bottrill, who has made amazing albums with bands like Tool, King Crimson, Silverchair and Moneen, is producing.

After completing our contract with Equal Vision we embarked on a long search to find our next home. We met with lots of labels and decided that Atlantic Records is the best place for us to continue our growth as a band and to help us release our music around the world. Because this is a big step we feel the need to reassure you that we are and always will be the same band no matter what label we are on.

The band released On Letting Go in 2007.

Mick Jones exhibiting Rock n Roll Public Library

Mick Jones of the The Clash is in the midst of a five week art project in London dubbed the The Rock n Roll Public Library. The exhibit will run every week through the 25th of August from Wednesday to Sunday at the Ladbroke Grove Underground in the British capital. The event is described as follows:

The Rock n Roll Public Library is Mick Jones’s (The Clash, B.A.D, Carbon Silicon) direct artistic challenge to the likes of the corporate 02 British Music Experience. Rather than let his creative legacy atrophy Jones is ‘transforming’ his own archive of near 10.000 artefacts into one unique ‘guerrilla-library.’ Set under the Westway motorway in 3000 sq.ft of former office space, Jones’s five-week civic endeavour will also encourage visitors to enrol, interact with the archive-exhibition (Jones began collecting well before he formed The Clash in 1976 to eventual international success, as such it forms an invaluable guide to the influences that informed Jones as a pop-artist). Also uniquely by request users will be able to scan (courtesy Genus, U.K distributor of the Book2net Kiosk) certain objects and via memory stick carry them away. Please note visitors to the world’s first, resolutely alternative, Rock n Roll Public Library shouldn’t expect peace and quiet.

Jones and Tony James of Generation X have played and recorded in recent years as Carbon/Silicon.
