Dan Whitesides (The Used)

The Used The Used are back with their fourth album, Artwork. Change was a consistent trend throughout the writing and recording process with a switch from long-time producer John Feldmann to Matt Squire, the creation of a much dirtier sound and the first album appearance of drummer Dan Whitesides to name a few. Whitesides has been instrumental in the new direction the band is currently taking. He took some time to sit down and chat with Mark Millard about the writing process behind Artwork, the adjustments needed in order to join the band and the motivation behind the changes they have made over the last few years.

Drag the River release free live album

Suburban Home Records is giving away Drag the River‘s live album, Live at the Starlight. The album was originally released in 2002 and later re-released by Suburban Home in 2005. Since then, it’s been out of print. Virgil Dickerson of Suburban Home had this to say,

As some of you may or may not know, the CD version of “Live at the Starlight” has been out of print for a while now. Whenever a release goes out of print, a handful of enterprising individuals take advantage of the inability to easily purchase the release and sell their own copy(ies) through sites like Ebay or Amazon for outrageous prices. One such individual has “Live at the Starlight” for sale for $80 on Ebay. You can’t blame people for doing this, but Jon felt that if we gave the album for free, no one would feel the need to spend so much money on the CD.

Drag The River, which consists of Jon Snodgrass and Chad Price recently called off their breakup and plan to release a new album in 2010 or 2011. Meanwhile Chad Price is releasing a solo album.

Frank Turner talks about illegal downloading

Frank Turner has posted an update with his thoughts on illegal downloading:

Obviously you can’t un-invent the internet (nor would I want to, it’s one of humanity’s highest achievements), and obviously illegal downloading happens, and is here to stay. To be philosophical about it, the industry structure that has successfully rewarded musicians and others (engineers, producers, PRs, agents and so on) for their labour since the 1960s is in the process of dissolving. A situation where people labour and are not reimbursed is untenable and unjust.

Firstly, while I am confident that we will realign, it’d be naive not to notice the danger that a generation of people are coming up who do not understand why they should pay for music at all. It seems churlish to restate, but let’s put it this way: recording isn’t free, instruments aren’t free, session players, producers, engineers, artists aren’t free. My time isn’t free either – I work hard and I expect to get paid for it.

Secondly, the idea that by stealing music from the internet you’re somehow crusading for justice against the big bad record labels is absolute fucking bullshit and needs to be stamped out. Britney Spears and David Geffen aren’t going to downsize their condo’s because you didn’t pay for a Fugazi album.

Check it out here.

Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy arrested, released on bail

Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump was arrested in Los Angeles late Tuesday night after being picked up for a two-year-old warrant for driving without a license. Stump was released yesterday after posting $15,000 bail. The warrant is the result of Stump’s 2007 failure to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid license. There is no word on whether this will hamper the band’s plans to play Reading Festival in England tomorrow.

Fallout Boy most recently released 2008’s Folie รก Deux. Stump has also taken up a music review position at Rolling Stone Magazine.
