A conversation with the curator of the punk rock auction at Christie’s

Last week, it was announced that Christie’s, the leading art business and a fine arts auction house founded in 1766, will be hosting a punk-themed auction. Set for November 24th, the auction will feature memorabilia from Ramones, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Blondie, the Cure and Patti Smith among others.

Our friends at Yuppie Punk interviewed Simeon, who explained the origins of some of the items as well as how they were appraised by the auction house as well as presenting a list of some notable items:

In this particular auction, I recruited the help of a gentleman by the name of Johan Kugelberg, who’s well-known in punk circles. In fact, for record collectors out there, he’s the guy who came up with the “Killed by Death” series which brought super-rare punk records to the masses.

As for some choice items, Simeon mentions:

There’s a poster for the Ramones at the Roundhouse, July 4th, 1976. And that’s a really famous concert because it’s known that the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned were among the audience and were influenced by the concert. It was a seminal event, certainly in British punk history.

As for why the auction house drew the line by including only 70s and 80s-era material and nothing from the 90s:

Like wine, it has to mature, and that material hasn’t matured yet. We know there’s a market right now for a lot of the punk stuff from the ’70s and early ’80s,
