In our on going effort to highlight the maps we have in development, we bring you City in the Sewers.
In an attempt to make life difficult for the US, the NVA has sabotaged the sewer system of a major city where the US has a large presence. Dysentery, Malaria and Wild Fever are rampant in the city. Everywhere the US fights is covered in green sewage. Good thing your computer doesnt have smell-a-vision.
EA posted their community update today. The first part said the patch passed quality testing. I expect we should see it soon. But the next part blew me away. I cant tell you how excited I am about this. Thank you DICE!
A Gift from EA and DICE
For some time, DICE Canada has been secretly working on something very cool as a gift for owners of Battlefield Vietnam. We’re pleased to finally announce the fruition of this work: the OFFICIAL WWII Mod for Battlefield Vietnam.
Have you ever wondered what Wake Island or Iwo Jima would look and play like with real tropical foliage? Do you love Battlefield Vietnam but you want to be able to relive the classics without having to dig up your 1942 disks?
The WWII Mod includes the classic Wake Island, Invasion of the Philippines and Iwo Jima maps rebuilt to take advantage of all of the new features of the Vietnam rendering engine (normal mapping, undergrowth, overgrowth, etc.), as well as the gameplay tweaks that came with BFV. (capture timer, 3D Map, use of kit weapons from passenger seats, vehicle radios, etc.)
But that’s not all, DICE Canada has also added a brand new Flamethrower weapon for both the Axis and Allied teams and re-animated all of the weapons from Battlefield 1942’s Pacific Theatre. The WWII Mod has been in heavy testing here at EA for some time, so expect to see it some time in the near future.
We wanted to show off another custom map, GRB Ghost in the Darkness. It is based off of our BF42 map called Ghost Front. While it uses the same height map, it is really a very different map. We played this map Friday during our custom map night and it was a blast. It is designed to force the battles in a tug of war fashion, with both sides pouring onto the Temple, for control. You can still grab it from the download section. Look for the custom map pack #7.
Some interesting notes about this map:
– The tunnel is very detailed, with wind sounds once you enter and a capturable flag. The smoke/fog adds an eerie effect. There were some intense battles for this flag.
– The Temple is the midpoint on the map. This capture point does not have a spawn, so you need to constantly feed troops to defend it. There were some great battles for this flag also.
– There is an Easter egg on this map. Watch for broken birds, falling from the sky GI. They will hurt you. 🙂
– Speaking of birds, see if you can find the spot in the jungle where you scare off a whole mess of them. It scared me the first time I heard it. Very cool effect.
I just received word from Aaron over at Texas Pain about their CTF mod for BFV. This was something DICE should have put in from the beginning, but it is great to see the community doing something about it. Click read more for the full scoop and a download link.
BFV CTF MOD Beta Ver 0.5 Released (Testers needed)
BFV CTF MOD – Battlefield Vietnam Capture The Flag (CTF) Gametype mod – about 51% complete.
Version 0.5, fixed the capture announcements, added more maps, and much more. The capture the flag code does work In CTF game mode the conquest flags do not function as conquest flags they seem to operate the same as a flag cap. So we made all conqest flags un-cappable so they are just spawns. We still need some help with the menu adding the option to start a CTF server in game. more details will follow about running a dedicated server. Continue reading BFV CTF
I just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone who dropped by and played some of the best custom maps we have ever had. Not a single bad map in the mix. Everyone was saying great things.
Raze was also happy to hear how many people enjoyed Ghost in the Darkness and Guadalnam. We will be releasing Guadalnam and No Remorse from last months event as single downloads soon. If anyone gets these maps and puts them in rotation on a server, please let us know. We would love to play them some more. Ghost in the Darkness is currently being reviewed for possible changes. If we do make changes, make sure you grab the new version when it comes out.
To all the map makers whose maps we played. You did a great job and we really enjoyed playing your maps. To all those who played and put up with the slight lag, we are currenlty pulling our money together and trying to puchase a more powerful server. It seems that all of the custom maps were more taxing on the server than anything we have ever experienced.
We want these events to be fun and lag free. With a newer server, things should be even bigger and better. As always, we couldnt have done it without you. Thanks for playing and we will see you again on July 30th! Mark your calendars and tell your friends.
Dice posted a new update today on their website. They appear to be listening to the BFV community. Way to go DICE!

As you know, we are working on many custom maps for BFV. We wanted to spotlight some of our work for you during the development stage. You can visit our Photo Gallery to see more screenshots from this and other custom maps.
Todays spotlight is on Guadalnam. Here is the intel we have on this map. Note the black air vehicles.
They say the battle for Guadalnam did not actually happen. At least, that is what they would have you believe.
Public perception of the Vietnam War was a major issue for US politicians. The NVA knew this and wanted to do something that would make it even harder for the US to continue fighting in Vietnam.
The NVA knew if they could take the war to the US, it would have a drastic effect on the US public. As part of the Tet Offensive, they took a play from the Japanese playbook during WWII. They set up operations on Guadalcanal, with the intent of attacking Hawaii.
Due to the delicate nature of this battle, the US decided to keep this operation as quiet as possible. Headed by the CIA, a group of special elite forces attacked the NVA on Guadalcanal with one goal; to take back the island and stop any offensive against the US outside of Vietnam.
The latest video card drivers from ATI are out and they fix the annoying issue with the Antialiasing. So, if you own an ATI card grab these drivers.
– Enabling AF to 8x and running the game Battlefield Vietnam with the graphics set to high and the display set to 1280×1024 32bpp no longer results in display corruption being seen at a certain point of the game
Ok, Fine… Here is the link.
EA and DICE have released the 1.02 Patch for Battlefield Vietnam. Lets hope that this resolves the Crash to Desktop issue and that we have have seen the last of these “events”, especially during TWL matches.
You can read the update and download the patch ——> here
Little slow on the uptake with this EA community announcement posted on 6/4/04
“Battlefield Vietnam Update 1.02 Coming Next Week
DICE has been able to track down the Crash to Desktop issue that has been reported by the members of our community since the 1.01 update. We will be releasing a new BFV update that addresses this issue next week. Please note that this update is meant only to address the Crash to Desktop issue (along with a related disconnect issue).”
Maybe there is hope for this game after all as this is the fastest turn around resolving a game issue so far in the history of the Battlefield series. Look for the 1.02 patch later this week.
