Talk About Strange Bedfellows

Launch reports: As two of the stars of the upcoming movie the Dukes Of Hazzard, Willie Nelson and Jessica Simpson will be recording a duet for the films soundtrack. There is no word yet on what song the two will sing, according to Rolling Stone. Simpson tells the magazine, “Were still deciding. We have a couple (of songs) we like.” [see full story for more]

When open source and music merge.

Many people know me as a HUGE Linux and open source nut. I am even fanatical at times due to the importance I see in where open source can take us as a whole.

Well, I received an email today that contained an article on RedHat’s website. This article is, in my opinion, one of the best articles to speak on open source and music.

Read it! It is worth it.

“The irony of popular music is that many of the great songs are about challenging the status quo. About sticking it to The Man and annoying the hell out of your parents. Yet much of the mainstream music we hear today is homogenized and shamelessly formulaic.”

The Los Angeles label announced that it will showcase many of its latest signings on an upcoming tour. Morrissey The Musical

Xfm reports: New reports claim that a musical based around the music of The Smiths and Morrissey is currently being written and will be staged at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, West London, with rehearsals pencilled in to start in May 2005.

The musical is named after The Smiths 1986 track Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others and is said to feature over 20 Smiths songs all arranged for a string quartet with vocals being supplied by a cast of six. Due to negotiations with representatives for Morrissey and his Smiths co-writer Johnny Marr, its not yet known which songs will be used. [see full story for more]

APC On Hold

MuchMusic reports: A Perfect Circle have announced that they will be going back on hiatus as members of the group pursue their own projects. The news comes just over a week after the Election Day release of their politically charged “eMOTIVe” album. Meanwhile, frontman Maynard Keenan says hell be recording and touring with Tool. Fans hoping for a little more from A Perfect Circle are in luck. The band releases a CD/DVD package called “aMOTION” later this month.

Clapton Plans Live Johnson Tribute

liveDaily reports: Prog-rock outfit Queensryche plans to spend early 2005 putting the finishing touches on its follow-up 1988s “Operation Mindcrime,” but not before previewing some of the new material during a round of winter concerts.

Billed as “An Evening with Queesryche,” the shows will be split into two halves. The set list for act one features hits culled from throughout the groups career, while act two will find the band performing “Operation: Mindcrime” in its entirety for the first time since the early 90s.

The “Operation:Mindcrime” production will include live actors who will portray the albums various characters, and will also include new and expanded video footage not used when the band last performed “Operation:Mindcrime” during its 1990-91 tour [see full story for more]

Pitchfork reports: Our favorite alternatively rocking space-age bachelors (and bachelorettes, right) are preparing to catch thee up with their many EPs, singles and other stray tracks– Switched On-style.

Now, its been about nine years since the last Switched On comp, so theres quite a collection of ephemera to wade through– and it would appear their newest collection is designed with the completist in mind. According to a post on the bands website, next spring will see the release of a giant 3xCD compilation stretching back to the 18-minute majesty of “Jenny Ondioline”, which was first released in 1993. The set, tentatively slated for mid-April, is being mastered in a few weeks, at which point the final running order (and presumably, the title) will be fixed. [see full story for more]

Van Halen Breaking Up

Melodic Rock reports: Rumors flared again last week after Hagar appeared on US radio station KSHE, stating in an interview that he thought the Van Halen re-union was fun, but it bought closure to that chapter. He went on to voice his unhappiness with the high ticket prices from the tour and how he wished some members of the band were into fan interaction as much as he was. It was implied that once the current dates were completed, Hagar would return to touring with The Waboritas and the future of VH would again be up in the air.

What really is going on? Whats next for Van Halen?

The reality is that at this point – no one knows. But I for one am not hopeful of anything continuing once this leg of the 2004 tour concludes.[see full story for a lot more]

liveDaily reports: Nine Inch Nails brain trust Trent Reznor has canned the working title of the groups next album, previously known as “Bleedthrough,” and has given fans an idea of when to expect to see it in stores.

“Bleedthrough is no more,” Reznor wrote in a message posted at the groups website. “As the songs and concepts matured, the focus and theme of the album shifted somewhat–leaving me feeling that title was inappropriate. Or you could just say I changed my mind.

“Yes, the new album has a title and track list, and no Im not telling you what it is yet,” he continued.

Blabbermouth reports: According to ABC ePrep, DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno says the folks at Maverick Records are so impressed with his side project TEAM SLEEPs new record that he expects the label to push the release of the CD back until next year. The disc was supposed to come out November 2, and was then pushed back to November 9. But Moreno says that after hearing the finished product, the label decided, “they really want to promote it,” and will most likely wait until next year to release it so theyll be able to give it more attention. Reuters reports: Ozzy Osbourne has returned to his satanic roots by recording a version of the Rolling Stones “Sympathy for the Devil” for an upcoming covers CD.

The disc, one of four to be featured in a boxed set due next February, also includes fresh takes on the Beatles “In My Life,” King Crimsons “21st Century Schizoid Man” and Arthur Brown (news)s “Fire,” Osbourne told Reuters in an interview at his Beverly Hills home on Thursday.

AP reports: Headbangers, get out your checkbooks. Your chance to own a piece of heavy metal history is finally here. An auction of items from the genres biggest names, including Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, KISS and Van Halen, is scheduled for Nov. 6 at the Hard Rock Cafe in midtown Manhattan, organizers said Friday.

Online bidding for whats billed as the first metal auction will also occur at www.julienentertainment.com.

More than 100 lots are up for sale, including the original album cover artwork from Metallicas “Master of Puppets,” expected to bring up to $7,000; the 1989 MTV Music Award given to Guns N Roses for the “Sweet Child O Mine” video ($3,000-$5,000); and an electric bass played by late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton ($7,000-$9,000). AP reports: Drummer Tommy Lee has played plenty of stadium shows with his band Motley Crue. But none was quite like his performance with the University of Nebraska marching band before 77,881 red-clad football fans.
