We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen

Our band could be your life, real names be proof….

I watched We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen on DVD tonight (Thank You Netflix!). This is a 90 minute documentary about the how the band came about, its D.I.Y. philosophy, and the void left by the untimely death of D. Boon in a traffic accident on December 22, 1985. It features interviews with Mike Watt and George Hurley as well as a long list of punk rock icons. Disk 1 Contains the 90 Minute Documentary and 2+ Hours of extras and Disk 2 Contains 62 live songs from 3 full performances.

Growing up in a small town in the pre-internet days of the 70s and 80s, I didnt have a lot of exposure to anything that wasnt mainstream pop or country on the radio stations in the area. I first heard of the Minutemen through R.E.M. which I had just started listening to after I had stumbled upon someones taped copy of their Murmur album. I happened to read in Rolling Stone that R.E.M was going on tour with the Minutemen and so I figured if R.E.M. liked them enough to tour with them, that they must be good. So next time I went to “the big city” (actually a small town but they did have Dartmouth college and an awesome record store) I dug around until I found Double Nickels on A Dime. It took a few listens before I began to appreciate the genius that is that album as it was nothing like what I was expecting. I have since worn out to cassette copies but have finally secured a digital copy so I wont have to worry about that again. I also purchased everything else that I could find by them in the meantime. Their unique style of music combined with overt politics, and their passion for life and the music just struck a chord with me that has kept me listening to them for 20 years. Tonight I finally got to hear their story as told by them and their friends and it kept me transfixed for several hours.

This little spiel (to steal Mike Watt & D. Boons term) doesnt do this film or the band justice, but if you like the Minutemen or even if you have never heard of them check it out, it will be good for you.

Dimebag Darrell Lives on 2 New Releases

all things possible reports: Vinnie Paul, famed drummer from Pantera and Damageplan
has formed Big Vin Records with both a CD and DVD scheduled to debut the label on
May 2ND of this year.

Dimevision, Volume 1, Thats the Fun I Have is a full-length DVD featuring
Pantera/Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell whose untimely death in December of
2004 left a void in both the world of music and his brother Vinnies life. The DVD
features a video cacophony of archival footage both on and offstage taken throughout
the years by Dime as well as various friends and family. Dimebags antics and
appetite for a great joke and laughter were as well known as his masterful guitar
playing.

Rebel Meets Rebel is a collaboration between the “Cowboys from Hell,” the late
Dimebag Darrell on guitar, Vinnie Paul on drums, and Rex Brown on bass along with
vocals by country outlaw legend and GRAMMY award-winning songwriter David Allan Coe.
(Pantera fans will recognize Coes classic, “Jack Daniels If You Please” from the
bands concert intro tape.)

Intel growing out of Pentium?

A while back Intel was sporting a new logo design as well as logo sticker designs for their products. They removed the images soon thereafter.

Funny thing about the new logo stickers for the new processors supporting dual core and single core processors, they did not have the name “Pentium” on them.

Check the new logo and the lack of Pentium.

Could Intel be moving on from the Pentium name that they have successfully stood behind around 13 years?

Body Count Live DVD

Being a big fan of music, there are only a few concerts I regret not attending. The first one was Nirvanas In Utero Tour, Stevie Ray Vaughns last tour and missing these guys playing a small old movie theatre in support of their first release. I heard it was a hell of a show, but this may make up for it.

Press Release

Eagle Rock Entertainment, the leading independent source for high quality music audio/visual programming, will release Smoke Out Presents: Body Count, a DVD presentation of a rare live performance from legendary rapper Ice-Ts hardcore punk-thrash metal band. Body Count appeared for San Bernardinos Smoke Out Festival in 2003, in the wake of the worst fires in California history. The DVD arrives in stores on October 4.

Ice-T, who is also known for his work as an actor, including his role on NBCs “Law and Order: SVU,” was already one of the most famous rappers in America when, in 1992, he unveiled Body Count. The band was his tribute to punk/metal bands like Motorhead and Suicidal Tendencies. Almost immediately following the release of their debut, Body Count was denounced by President George H.W. Bush and then-NRA chairman Charlton Heston due to the self-evident sentiments of the song “Cop Killer.” During that election year, Ices record label, Sire, severed all ties to the rapper.
