The Electronic Frontier Foundation has posted a listing of all of the CDs that are believed to have Sonys wonderful (full sarcasm there) rootkit DRM. While the list may not be exhaustive the site instructs you in how to identify these tainted disks when browsing at your local music store.

You also want to make sure that you turn off autorun before you use one of these CDs in you computer.

Glad I Dont Live In China PDF Print E-mail
Censorship

When you think about it, everything in this world is screwed up. I could find something wrong with every game, every company, heck even every part of the government. However, as screwed up as things are in the good ole US of A, I am glad I dont live in China.

Take a look at this quote. It is from an article examining the Financial statement of the company that has licensed World of Warcraft in China.

“The online game industry in China is highly regulated by the Chinese government. Various regulatory authorities of the Chinese central government, such as the State Council, the State Press and Publication Administration, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Public Security, are empowered to issue and implement regulations governing various aspects of the online games industry.“

Come on! Its a freaking game for f#$*s sake. Ministry of Culture? What do a bunch of old bald mao se tung communist bastards know about the youth of their country?

To make matters worse, check out this quote.

"Although private sector Internet service providers currently exist in China, almost all access to the Internet is maintained through state−owned telecommunication operators under the administrative control and regulatory supervision of China’s Ministry of Information Industry. In addition, the national networks in China connect to the Internet through government−controlled international gateways. These government−controlled international gateways are the only channel through which a domestic Chinese user can connect to the international Internet network."

Does it scare you that these are the same guys who are pushing to get the UN control of the Internet from ICANN? It should.

So where am I going with all this? Hell, I dont even know, but as much as things are screwed up around here, it still looks a lot better than the crap going on the opposite side of the Earth. My only hope is someday, gamers of China will come to power and put an end to this monopolist regimes control of its people. Wouldnt that be a hoot? I can only image explaining to my grandson some day about the fall of communist China being brought about due to the rise of power of gamers.

While Im at it, China Gamers, I love your enthusiasm, but your government sucks.

Free Tibet! Long Live The Republic of Taiwan! YEAH!

Who owns the music and the rest of our culture? PDF Print E-mail

Issue 13.07 of Wired has a brief essay from the author William Gibson regarding the future of music and the impacts of remixing in particular:

"Our culture no longer bothers to use words like appropriation or borrowing to describe those very activities. Todays audience isnt listening at all - its participating. Indeed, audience is as antique a term as record, the one archaically passive, the other archaically physical. The record, not the remix, is the anomaly today. The remix is the very nature of the digital."

Read it. It will make you smarter. Trust me.

Somewhat Random Music Thought of the Day PDF Print E-mail

Walking down the street today I saw that the band "Skamasutra" was going to be playing in my community at some point this summer.

Dont get me wrong, I really enjoy ska music most of the time, but is it some unwritten rule that all ska bands must at least consider having a name with the word "ska" in it somehow?

Why hasnt this trend carried over to other musical forms? Why arent country bands required to have the word "redneck" somewhere in it? or maybe just "red" or "cow" to make it simple for them. Emo bands and bands that have names that sound like novels would have to include the word "whine", and all of these new bands that sound like they stepped right out of the seventies could include the word "crap"

Just think of how much easier it would be to identify a bands sound without hearing them at all. I would know right away that I didnt really want to hear "Whiny Day Real Estate" or "Alabama Rednecks" or "The Flaming Crap".

Just a thought that occurred to me this afternoon.

If you found this internal discussion particularly moving (and I know you did), feel free to jump into the forums and leave some witty comments in the Random Music Thought thread.

Diablo 3 In The Works? PDF Print E-mail
Diablo
Written by Atomm
Saturday, 30 April 2005
Scanning the net, we came across the rumor control page at GameSpot. Most of it was X-box related, but the last item really caught my attention. It involves development on Diablo 3, which has not been publicly announced by Blizzard.

From the GameSpot Article:

Midweek, the fan site Diabloii.net received an e-mail from someone claming to be a "musician in Czech Republic." The person said that, "I have recently been to Bratislava in Slovak Republic for recording sessions with local Radio Symphony Orchestra, where we just recorded music for Diablo 3." So why should we give credence to someone who could be a crank from a former Warsaw Pact country? Because the music for the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction was recorded in Bratislava, Slovakia, with the Slovak Radio Philharmonic, around four months before the expansion pack was released. By that same calculus, if the music for Diablo III was recorded this month, then the game could be released before the end of the year. (Although some rumors pegging it as a PlayStation 3 launch title would make that unlikely.) So while theres no definitive proof that Diablo III is in the can, it is looking more and more likely that Blizzard will announce the game soon...and perhaps as early as E3.

Hmmmmm...... This could be interesting.....

In more news unrelated to gaming or music, I just got word that NASA is considering sending a shuttle mission to service the aging Hubble telescope. I hope this happens. The Hubble is one of the greatest Astronomy tools we have and it would be a shame for it to crash to earth years before a replacement is scheduled to launch.
